Solid or engineered wood floor?

A wood floor is popular choice for domestic and commercial properties. While solid hardwood flooring remains hard to beat, engineered oak flooring is increasingly the floor covering of choice.

Solid hardwood floorboards have a charm that is hard to re-create with engineered boards. Because solid floorboards can shrink and distort a little in situ they develop a natural authenticity that is unique to real solid hardwood. The installing, sanding and sealing of a hardwood floor is a relatively skilled job and does require a reasonable level of expertise and the use of sanding machines.

If you are laying your floor boards over under-floor heating, or you would prefer your wood boards to have a precise fit, we offer a range of European made engineered oak flooring.

Choosing engineered wood also gives you the option to have a pre-finished floor and a wide array of options. Engineered boards are easier to lay than solid hardwood boards and require very little sanding. In the case of pre-finished boards, no sanding at all is required after installation.

Wood flooring specification

We supply our solid hardwood floor boards at 20mm thick and in random lengths. Most of our floors are supplied in a traditional mixed width format. This allows us to use as much of the tree as possible and keeps the flooring looking authentic.

Our solid wood floor boards have a tongue and groove (T&G) joint running down the long edges but not on the ends. The ends of the boards will require trimming perfectly square before fitting. For suspended floors the ends of the solid boards must be supported by the joists.

Our range of engineered wood flooring is produced from European oak on high quality birch ply and is available in both 15mm and 20mm thick boards and a range of set widths. We offer unfinished as well as pre-finished engineered flooring options and a choice of grades ranging from clear to heavily distressed.

Engineered floor boards are supplied with T&G and micro bevel on all four edges. Floor board lengths are between 1.0mt and 2.4mt long. For suspended floors, engineered boards can by joined without the support of a joist.

Installing your floor

While we offer advice on how to fit your hardwood floor boards, we do recommend that you use an experienced fitter to carry out the work. We can recommend a few good local floor fitters.
