Wood For The Trees: Resilient Woodlands
In part 3 of our series about the future for British forests, our MD Tom Barnes talks to forester Jez Ralph.
Jez gave us a brief rundown of the history of forestry in the UK, and showed us experimental planting of native and novel species at Dartington estate. He said resilient woodlands are those focused on the future. “Its about what’s right for the soil, what’s right for the site and what’s right for society.”
These more complex, resilient woodlands could be more difficult and expensive to harvest, but Jez made the compelling point that with no healthy forests, there’s no timber.
