Oak Sleepers Features

Whether you are building a retaining wall, creating a raised bed or even making rustic furniture, natural untreated oak sleepers are a versatile and cost effective solution. Oak is tough and will last for many years when left outside.
Oak sleepers are rustic and will include knots, splits and odd worm holes. The sleepers will mostly have straight edges but there will be bark on some corners. Being a natural product the oak may vary in colour and some faces may be grey when supplied.
You can buy oak sleepers  individually or in full packs for a discounted price. We hold large stocks but during busy periods, there may be a delay while we cut your order.

Characteristics

Appearance
The colour of oak is quite variable, ranging between pale yellow and dark brown. The surface of the sleepers is rough sawn. Ends will be trimmed but lengths will not be exact.

Quality
Oak sleepers will contain knots, surface splits and odd worm holes. There is no limit to defects providing the sleeper is sound. Because oak sleepers are of a lower grade, they are not suitable for structural applications.

Weathering
When left outside the colour of the oak sleepers will change to a silver-grey.

Working properties
Oak sleepers are hard and will require pre-drilling.

Extractives
Oak contains tannic acid, which will corrode ferrous metals. All fixings used in conjunction with oak sleepers must be stainless steel. Tannic acid will stain any porous materials below the oak sleepers.
